Man Wanted By Department Of Corrections Arrested In Lawrenceville

The man had an active warrant for escape/parole violation through the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — A man police say was wanted by the Department of Corrections was arrested late Saturday afternoon in the area of Grayson Parkway and Crane Drive.

Gwinnett County Police said Charles Edward Smith, 51, had an active warrant for escape/parole violation through the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole. Gwinnett County officers obtained an additional warrant for felony obstruction.

Officers were dispatched around 5 p.m. to a possible sighting of Smith in the Grayson/Crane area. When they arrived, they found him outside of a nearby home, police said.

Smith is accused of running from the officers towards Crane before police K-9 Nitro was deployed. The officers found Smith behind a home with his arms wrapped around Nitro, and they gave him commands to release the K-9, police said.

An officer used a Taser to get Smith to fall to the ground, but Smith is accused of resisting arrest. Smith was eventually arrested and taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries sustained during the arrest.
