Police Investigating Shooting Death at Lawrenceville Exxon

The shooter was changing a tire when he was confronted by another man, police say.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — Gwinnett County Police are continuing to investigate a dispute in an Exxon parking lot Tuesday that led to a Lawrenceville man's shooting death.

Shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call to the Exxon at 2339 Lawrenceville Highway in Lawrenceville.

They arrived to find a man identified as John Chambers, 58, of Lawrenceville, lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center and later pronounced dead.

Investigation revealed that the shooter, Jason Lance, 34, of Grayson, had stopped to fix a flat tire at the station when he was confronted by Chambers. The two men knew each other, police said.

The confrontation turned into a fight and Lance got a firearm from his vehicle, firing a single shot, according to police

Lance remained at the scene and was interviewed there by detectives.

Lance was released and no charges had been filed as of Wednesday morning. Investigators are working to determine how the men knew each other, what started the fight and whether the shooting was, in fact, in self-defense.
