Police Recruits Paint House For Lawrenceville Woman
The volunteer outing was an exercise to remind recruits that police work is about community service.
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — A Lawrenceville woman has a freshly painted house, thanks to recruits and staff from the Gwinnett County police academy.
Recruits at the county's 95th academy took part in a community service project on Saturday at the guidance of Cpl. Frederick Saldana, class coordinator for the students.
"In an effort to show them that this job and life is about community service and giving, I thought it would be a good idea to do a class community project," Saldana said.

Recruits were allowed to decide on their own project. They chose A Brush With Kindness, which is a division of Gwinnett County's Habitat for Humanity.
The home they were assigned to paint belongs to a single mother in Lawrenceville. The home is off of Creekwood Cove.

Recruits were joined by several academy staffers and some of their families. They painted the exterior and trim of the woman's home with paint and materials donated by Habitat for Humanity.
The Chick-fil-A on Scenic Highway in Snellville donated breakfast and lunch and Gwinnett County Police Chief Butch Ayers stopped by to visit with the recruits and staff.
"This was a terrific opportunity to show the recruits that the Gwinnett County Police Department is part of the overall community," police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said. "There is an immeasurable feeling of pride after giving time and resources to someone in need."
The recruits will be graduating from the police academy on Thursday, August 25.
