Prisoner Bus Involved In Multi-Vehicle Crashes On I-85

The bus was full of inmates and near Buford when it was involved in the wreck shortly before 2 p.m. on Friday.

BUFORD, GA — A bus loaded with prison inmates was one of several vehicle involved in three separate crashes on Interstate 85 near Buford Friday afternoon.

The wrecks happened shortly before 2 p.m. in the interstate's southbound lanes near Buford Drive, according to Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge.

The Georgia State Patrol reported that eight vehicles, including the transport bus, were involved in the wrecks.

Firefighters, Georgia State Patrol and Gwinnett County Police responded to the scene. Paramedics checked with occupants of all the vehicles involved and the only injury complaints came from those on board the prison bus, Rutledge said.

In all, 25 of the 31 passengers on the bus — 24 inmates and one prison guard — were evaluated by paramedics. All 25 complained of minor injuries and were cleared by paramedics. No one from any of the vehicles was transported to the hospital, the GSP said.

A second prison bus was called to transport the inmates to their destination.
