The Interviewing Phases

Strong branded résumés get you in the doors of companies, while effective interviews win you the position.   Now, that you have passed the gate keeper – the online career portal, what’s next?

Next, would be the interview.  The interview process can be quite lengthy and daunting for some.  Depending on the level of the position you are going after, the process can have several phases like:

  • Phone Interview with hiring manager (or team)
  • On-site Interview with the team you will be working with.
  • And sometimes, there will be a second on-site with your boss’ boss.

This process can span a few weeks before decisions are made.

So let’s discuss a few tips to prepare for your conversations.  Yes, think of the interview as a conversation.  This should take a little pressure off.

For the phone interview, have all of your information laid out.  Have your résumé, the job description, interview scenarios (see “Acing the Interview” post, next week), company research and Internet available and ready.    And don’t forget to have your bubbly personality come through the phone.   If you are using your cell phone, make sure you have excellent reception.

Important to note:  Some companies are replacing phone interviews with Skype.  This will require that you have on your business attire on from the waist up.

As we know, the on-site interview will not allow us to have everything available.  Make sure you have extra copies of your résumé in your portfolio.  Know your résumé inside and out.  And of course, dust off your professional attire and shoes.

When scheduling the on-site interview, try to get as much information as possible, such as your schedule, who will you be meeting with and their titles. This will also help you understand if you will be meeting with the team one-on-one or if you will have panel interviews.  And don’t forget to look the interviewers on LinkedIn as they will be looking you up on social media, too.
