Two Teens Killed In Gwinnett County Crash (ICYMI)

The wreck happened at about 6:45 p.m. Sunday at an intersection of Lawrenceville Highway.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — A teen driver and one of his passengers were killed Sunday evening in a wreck on Lawrenceville Highway.

At about 6:45 p.m., police and EMS personnel were called to a crash at the intersection of Kenvilla Drive and Lawrenceville Highway in the Lilburn-Tucker area. When firefighters arrived, they found that Sani N. Velani, 16, of Tucker, had died in the crash, according to a Gwinnett County Police Department report.

According to the report, Velani had been driving a 2016 Honda Accord south on Lawrenceville Highway. Another driver, Kiara N. Oliver, of Norcross, was headed north in a 2000 Chevy Tahoe.

As Velani approached, Oliver attempted to turn left onto Kenvilla Drive. She pulled into his path, causing the Accord and Tahoe to crash head-on, according to the report.

Both vehicles spun out of control. Velani's car struck a power pole, and Oliver's Tahoe came to a rest in the southbound lane of Lawrenceville Highway.

Velani was declared dead at the scene.

Witnesses at the scene said Velani "was traveling at a high rate of speed and made multiple lane changes prior to the collision," according to the police report. His speed is listed in the report as a contributing factor in the crash.

Multiple passengers were injured in the crash. While being transported to a local hospital, Afaan Asif, 15, of Tucker, died from his injuries, the report said.

Oliver and two other passengers in Velani's car — Rutesh Kakadiya, 16, of Lilburn, and Taha Muhammed, 15, of Tucker — were transported to local hospitals. The extent of their injuries was not known Monday morning.
Both vehicles were impounded, and the investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said.
