A woman in her 80s was critically injured in a Monday night fire at a personal care home for the elderly near Lawrenceville.

Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said in a press release late Friday that the woman was found unconscious with severe smoke inhalation and burns. She was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center-Lawrenceville in critical condition.

A second victim, a man in his 80s, was found outside with moderate smoke inhalation. He also was taken to GMC.

The fire occurred on the 800 block of Rock Springs Road. Fire crews arrived at 8:32 p.m. and found an active fire in the single-story wood-frame house over a half-basement.

Firefighters were told of the woman trapped inside and immediately entered the house to search. She was found in a bedroom adjacent to the room where the fire started. She was removed through a window.

The fire caused heavy damage to the interior of the house. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

The senior care home is located inside a private residence, Rutledge said. There were eight people in the house at the time of the fire — 6 elderly residents, 1 visitor, 1 caregiver.
