Lilburn Co-op’s Holiday Food Drive

The Lilburn Cooperative Ministry is collecting food for 500 families this holiday season. Kay Whithear, the ministry director, believes unemployment is the cause for many families needing ministerial support, namely through meat or side dishes. “People need to eat,” Whithear says, trying to ensure relying families will be able to do so.

To help feed these families, 260 volunteers, 35 churches, 15 schools and multiple businesses are donating food and services. Suwanne’s Fresh Market donates $7,000 worth of food weekly. Businesses like Papa Johns and Red Lobster freeze perishables. Lilburn’s own Killian Hill Christian School collects food through an annual food-drive – enough to fill the bed of a pickup truck.

While this appears to be enough food, Whithear says “it goes out so fast.” On a normal business day, the Lilburn Co-op will give 45 families a cart of food.

Not stopping at food, this ministry helps pay bills and find housing. Last Tuesday a family with six children moved from a motel into a duplex, thanks to the Lilburn Co-op. Whithear says the man was in tears over the good news.

Future plans for the Lilburn Co-op are to continue reaching out to the community through free GED classes and single parent support groups.
