Local Quilters Make Pillows for Northside Hospital Cancer Patients

The Gwinnett Quilters’ Guild recently presented Northside Hospital’s Cancer Institute with approximately 202 allows for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

As a regional leader in cancer care, Northside treats more than 3,500 patients with cancer each year.  Many of these patients require chemotherapy as part of their care.  Pillows help to ease some of the side effects that patients often experience during treatment, providing comfort as they sit for long hours.  The pillows also act as a cushion or support for surgical oncology patients, helping take pressure off sensitive areas.

“Most importantly, they act as a big cozy hug, cheering up patients and letting them know that others are thinking of them,” said Susan Casella, breast health coordinator at Northside.  “Pillows are very popular among our patients and, unfortunately, we go through quite a few; we are so grateful to the Gwinnett Quilters’ for supporting our patients.”

“The Gwinnett Quilters’ Guild is pleased to donate these pillows to Northside,” said quilter Carolyn Meeks.  “We hope that they will offer comfort to those recovering from breast cancer surgery.”

Founded in 1980, the Gwinnett Quilters’ Guild promotes the art of quilting, educating those interested in preserving, continuing and maintaining such art.  The group meets monthly and completes several community service projects throughout the year.  Approximately 160 members make up the guild.  Many members are breast cancer survivors themselves.  For more information, visit www.gwinnettquiltersguild.org.
