Providence Christian Academy Students Represents Georgia in National History Day Contest

Congratulations to Providence Christian Academy's rising eighth grader Liberty Schultz. She and a neighborhood friend placed first at the National History Day’s regional and state contests this spring and ranked 12th out of more than 100 contestants representing nearly 10 different countries at the national level event at the University of Maryland in June.

Each year, more than half a million students participate in the NHD contests. Students choose historical topics related to a theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews and historic sites. After analyzing and interpreting their sources and drawing conclusions about their topics’ significance in history, students present their work in original papers, websites, exhibits, performances and documentaries.

Schultz chose to write, film, edit, and perform the voice over work for an original documentary, titled "Influenza, The Shot Heard Around the World,” which can be viewed at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txBYO5FjvPA. At the state competition, one judge described the group’s work as “as close as to perfection as this age group can possibly be,” and another judge regarded the documentary as “incredible work!” At the national contest, Schultz represented the state of Georgia by defending her documentary before a panel of judges, answering any questions related to the topic of “influenza” and the science behind the “flu vaccine.”
