My Tennis Challenge - Update 1

Can I go from tennis newbie to legitimate player in 2 months and for less than $100? My first step is to find a good coach. Here's my plan.

My tennis challenge is to go from tennis newbie to legitimate player in 2 months and for less than $100.  Read more about it .

The first and most important task is to find a good coach who can take me from tennis newbie to legitimate player.  Where do I start?   

I need a coach who:

  1. Knows what he/she is doing and has a proven record.
  2. Has a style that will be effective with me.  I’m not looking for a drill sergeant, but I don’t want someone who is afraid to hurt my feelings, either.  I mostly need someone who will be an effective communicator.
  3. I’m open to either a man or woman coach.
  4. Will work with me for free.

Where can I find this coach?  Here are the options I have, in order of preference.

  1. Ask the tennis players I know for a recommendation.  The tennis player I respect the most, my wife, suggested her own coach, Doug Bowie.  
  2. Check out the .  Tennis coach Bryan Shepherd comes with high recommendations.
  3. Search the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) for a local coach.  I found 11 USPTA-approved coaches who live within 7 miles of me.  From the website you can learn a little about the coach, but there are still a lot of unknowns.  I would need to contact each one and see if I could get a few references.  

My first step is to contact Doug Bowie.
