Approximately
60 students from Arcado Elementary School will be walking and rolling to school Wednesday, celebrating their health and
wellness as well as the environmental benefits of walking to school from their nearby
homes.
Walkers and bicyclists, most
with their parents or siblings, will be welcomed at school by teachers and
members of the PTA with stickers and other prizes that show their participation. Additional incentives encourage them to
continue walking or biking when the weather permits. The regular walkers/bikers are featured on
the morning news show, and their names are displayed on a large banner in the
school. Children who live farther than 1 mile away are encouraged to make
posters to promote the event and are rewarded for their efforts as well.
In
2011, International Walk to School Day was celebrated at more than 4,000 events
at schools across the United States, along with children and adults in 40
countries around the world.
Walk to School Day events raise
awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and
emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among
children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment.
The events build connections between families, schools and the broader
community.
The event is being
organized by a joint effort of the PTA’s
Environmental/Health and Wellness Committees and Arcado’s P.E. Teacher, Mrs.
Kathy Muir. Arcado has participated
annually since 2008 and is a gold level participant in the Safe Routes to
School program.
