GBI Investigating 'In-Custody Death' of Suspect in Gwinnett

The suspect became unresponsive during an "altercation" with Gwinnett Police Saturday morning.

The GBI has been called in to investigate the death of man while he was being taken into custody in Gwinnett County early Saturday morning.

Gwinnett Police said in an emailed statement that officers responded to a dispute around 4 a.m. on Rock Place Drive in unincorporated southern Gwinnett County. This is an area associated with Stone Mountain.

The caller said a male neighbor was locked in his garage, angry and possibly armed.

“When officers went to make contact with the suspect an altercation ensued,” Gwinnett Police spokesman Sgt. Brian Doan said. “The suspect went unresponsive at the scene and was transported to Eastside Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.”

Due to the incident being an “in-custody death,” Doan said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to handle the investigation.
