Providence Christian to Add Football this Fall

The Stars will play at the varsity level in 2013

Gwinnett County will have another football-playing school this fall.

Providence Christian Academy in Lilburn announced Monday that it is moving forward with plans to start a football program.

“Starting football has clearly been a noteworthy topic here at Providence with many of parents and students over the years,” said Michael Woods, the school’s director of athletics. “Our school board and administration agree the time has come to officially add this sport.

“Our plan is to begin with a middle-school team this year and add a junior varsity team in 2012 and a varsity team in 2013.”

Woods said the decision was made after extensive research over the past two years, such as “far-reaching surveys.” That work included visits and interviews with private schools that have started football programs over the past three to five years.
Parent surveys and meetings also favored starting the program.

Wood said the net step forward will be to find “the right mission-appropriate” head coach, who will “lead our program in the manner in which we have come to expect all our sports programs to be led.”

Providence currently offers 12 sports: basketball, baseball, swimming, cheer, soccer, gymnastics, golf, track, cross country, volleyball, tennis and softball.
