Safety Checkpoint Results in 10 Arrests
Lilburn Police Officers arrest 10 during July Safety checkpoint.
The City of Lilburn conducted a Safety checkpoint on July 13th in collaboration with Gwinnett United In Drug Education (GUIDE, Inc). With 100 vehicles checked between the hours of 9pm and midnight, there were a total of 18 citations given out with ten arrests being made for a variety of violations. Five of these drivers were cited for driving without a license, three for disorderly conduct, five for possession of marijuana, one for open container, two for expired vehicle registration and two for driving under the influence.
Checkpoints like these are an important measure in combatting alcohol-related car accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTSA) reported that in 2014 drunk driving involvement in fatal car crashes was almost four times higher at night than during the day with 34% of crashes being alcohol related at night versus 9% during the day.
To avoid a DUI, the NHTSA recommends planning a safe way home before festivities that include alcohol, designating a sober driver and leaving car keys at home, using a taxi, calling a family member or using a public transportation.
