Three Dead After North Georgia Police Chase Ends in Crash

The driver of the vehicle that crashed was wanted in Lilburn on a shoplifting charge, state authorities say.

LILBURN, GA — Three people were killed and another two injured in a fiery crash after a multi-county police chase in north Georgia on Wednesday.

The driver of the vehicle, who was one of the three killed, was a South Carolina woman who Georgia State Patrol officials say had been wanted in Lilburn for failure to appear on a shoplifting charge.

State Patrol troopers were called at about 8:21 p.m. to investigate a fatal crash in Jackson County on Interstate 85 South on the exit ramp to State Route 98.

The incident started when a Banks County Sheriff's deputy spotted a silver Chrysler 200 speeding and driving aggressively on I-85 and attempted to make a traffic stop, the state patrol said.

Authorities say the driver fled south into Jackson County at speeds of more than 90 m.p.h.

The driver attempted to exit at the Maysville/Commerce exit, but was traveling too fast for the curve and left the roadway off the west shoulder — striking a traffic sign and a tree.

Five people were in the car, according to the GSP.

Driver Rebecca Toneya Mack, 21, and Clifton Gordon, 23, both of Greenville, South Carolina, and Jamarkeiz Jenkins, 29, of Mauldin, South Carolina, were killed in the crash.

Passengers Zaire Lamond Hewins, 22, and Chrishanique Yeargin, 22, of Greenville, were transported to Northeast Georgia Hospital in Gainesville.

It was unknown Friday if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors to the crash, which was still under investigation.
