56-Year-Old Woman Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting

Rita King, of Loganville, had two guns in her possession, according to the GBI.

LOGANVILLE, GA — A Loganville woman was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies Thursday after authorities say she pointed a gun at the officers.

Walton County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a call Thursday morning to find Rita King, 56, with two guns in her possession, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Officers gave verbal commands for her to drop the weapons, but she did not comply, according to the GBI. King then pointed a gun toward the officers, at which time they fired multiple rounds, striking and killing her.

The incident happened near Rosebud Road and Escoe Road in Loganville.

The GBI, which is routinely called to investigate officer-involved shootings, was called to the scene at about 10:30 a.m.

An autopsy is being conducted by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office.

The GBI did not identify the officer, or officers, who shot King. But, on Friday, the sheriff's office was asking for prayers for all involved.

"The entire Walton County Sheriffs Office family offers full love and support to the deputy involved in yesterday's unfortunate situation near Loganville," the office said in a Facebook post. "We ask our supporters and prayer warriors to pray for him, his family and the victim's family."
