81-Year-Old Woman Abducted, Stuffed in Trunk

LOGANVILLE, GA — Authorities in Walton County say a suspect is in custody for leading deputies on a two-county chase after throwing an 81-year-old woman into the trunk of her own stolen car.

John Christopher Calhoun, 29, was arrested Monday morning, after a second police chase, the Walton County Sheriff's office said

Early Sunday morning, the Walton County Sheriff's Office began receiving reports from citizens that their vehicles had been broken into. While deputies were investigating, they received calls reporting at least two stolen vehicles.

While those reports were being investigated, a call came in reporting a missing 81-year-old woman.

Deputies stopped the other investigations and focused on the missing woman, according to a news release.

A lookout was released for the woman's car, which was spotted by a Walton County deputy. He was in an unmarked vehicle but followed the car into Barrow County, where deputies began what ended up being a police chase.

The stolen vehicle wrecked behind a theater in Bethlehem and the driver ran away, authorities say.

The elderly woman was freed from the trunk and taken to Athens Regional Hospital, where the sheriff's office says she is expected to make a full recovery.

The Walton County Sheriff's Office says investigation led them to identify Calhoun as the driver of the car when it crashed.

On Monday, after police say he carjacked another vehicle in Barrow County, Calhoun was located back in Walton County.

He was arrested after what deputies described as a lengthy car chase and now faces numerous charges in Walton and Barrow counties.

Calhoun was believed to be armed and dangerous, according to the GBI.
