911 Call: Gun Went Off in Bed Georgia Police Chief Tells Operator
Wife in critical condition after New Year's shooting. Peachtree City Police Chief says shooting was an accident.

Peachtree City Police Chief William McCollum told a 911 operator early Thursday that he had accidentally shot his wife in the back.
“A gunshot wound. Accidental. Need medical ASAP,” McCollum said in audio released Friday.
Margaret McCollum, 58, continues to be treated for the wound at Atlanta Medical Center and remains in critical condition, according to WSB-TV.

She can be heard crying as her husband explains the incident to the 911 operator.
“The gun was in the bed, I went to move it, put it aside and it went off,“ McCollum said in the call, according to WSB TV.

McCollum is on administrative leave as the the state investigates the incident, and pending an internal review. Work by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations could take a week or more, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“You’re the Chief of Police in Peachtree City?” the 911 operator asked McCollum.
He responded, ”Unfortunately, yes.”
