Traditional chiropractic care focuses on decreasing pain, reducing muscle spasm and improving range of motion. Traditional chiropractors have been doing this for years, and I believe they do it quite well. Typically this method provides temporary relief or improvement of symptoms. Structural chiropractic uses a different approach.
Structural chiropractors use a very detailed analysis to detect structural shifts in the spine. A structural shift is a shift in the structure of the spine that causes abnormal positioning and leads to a variety of secondary conditions. Minor shifts in the alignment from time to time are common and typically correct themselves. We don’t expect people to have 100% perfect alignment, but if your spine shifts beyond the normal range, you now have a problem that requires intervention. When the spine shifts out of its normal alignment, it puts stress on the muscles, ligaments, discs, bones and nerves. This leads to a variety of secondary conditions (symptoms) such as pain, muscle spasm, headaches and pinched nerves.
If we were to compare the spine to the foundation of a house, we can appreciate the importance of normal alignment. If the foundation of a house cracks or sinks down on one side, it can have devastating effects on the rest of the house. We may see cracks in the walls, floorboards coming up or damage to the roof. Traditional chiropractic methods would focus on each individual problem like the walls, the floorboards and the roof, without ever addressing the underlying cause, which we know to be a problem with the foundation. Structural chiropractors focus on correcting the foundation, or in this case the structure of the spine first.

A structural chiropractic exam will consist of a history to determine lifestyle factors that may have contributed to abnormal shifts. After the history and physical exam, a digital structural analysis will be performed to evaluate the overall positioning of the body. Next, digital structural radiographs will be performed to better visualize how the spine is positioned in space. After a very detailed analysis of all the information from your examination, a care plan will be designed specifically for you to return the structure of the spine back to normal.
