Active-Shooter Survival Training Planned At Sheriff's Office

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting a training session Monday night on how best to survive an active-shooter situation, tailored to the needs of civilians.

The FBI defines an active shooter as “an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area.” An example would be Robert Aaron Long, who was indicted in both Cherokee and Fulton counties in connection with a March shooting spree at three Atlanta-area massage parlors. Long pleaded guilty to the Cherokee County charges on July 27.

According to a sheriff’s office post, the class will be taught by certified Advance Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) experts.

The session is scheduled for Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. in classrooms B and C at sheriff’s headquarters, located at 2900 University Parkway in Lawrenceville.
