Beheaded Voodoo Doll Left Outside Georgia Police Department

An apparently mutilated lizard also was discovered near the doll, Tybee Island Police say.

TYBEE ISLAND, GA — Was someone working black magic against the men and women in blue?

In the coastal, south Georgia town of Tybee Island, it looks like that might have been the case.

Police there recently found a voodoo doll with its head ripped off on a sidewalk outside of their headquarters building.

Next to the doll was what appeared to be a mutilated lizard.

"Despite the overwhelming support that we receive on a daily basis, there is the occasional reminder that not everyone likes the police," Tybee's police department wrote on Facebook. "We'll be reviewing the surveillance footage to see if we can identify our fan ... ."

They did so, and according to the Savannah Morning News, caught video images of a man placing the materials on the sidewalk.

"I appreciate the creativity," Tybee Island Police Chief Bob Bryson told the paper.

Bryson said that if the man can be identified, he could be charged with littering.

Tybee Island is just off the coast of Savannah, where the practice of voodoo has taken on a high profile in the past.

"Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," the best-selling novel by John Berendt turned into a film directed by Clint Eastwood, purports to chronicle the work done by a voodoo priestess on behalf of millionaire antiques dealer Jim Williams during his series of murder trials in the 1980s.

The book's title refers to the best times for doing positive and negative voodoo, according to the priestess, named Minerva.

Savannah being Savannah, someone with a Facebook account using the name Savannah Witchcraft Society jumped into the comments on the Tybee Police post to let officers know they're in no mystical danger.

"Y'all really don't have anything to worry about, those prefab dolls have no power," the comment reads. "And a lizard? Really?"

The department replied: "Thanks! It never hurts to have friends 'in the know'."
