Fluffy Friday: The Differences Between Girls and Boys

I am calling for a Fluffy Friday, which means no provocative posts from me. Only laughter. I hope.

My brain is weary this morning. I wrote a blog yesterday that provoked some really good comments and a lot of them. The last thing I want to do today is provoke any kind of response other than laughter. So let's call today Fluffy Friday and I promise to lay off anything even remotely heavy.

Herewith, I give you my thoughts on the differences between girls and boys.

I have two of the world’s cutest kids. They are sweet natured, generally obedient, and a ball of fun to be around. I’m grateful they are mine.

But lately I have noticed some distinct differences between them, and I’m not just talking about personality (though their temperaments do factor into these differences). There seems to be a DNA-level distinction between boys and girls.

Now, this is not news. People have been talking about this for years – women are from Venus, men laugh when you say, “Uranus” – but I’d always assumed a large part of that was the factors shaping our development into adults. I figured that nurture had a lot more to do with the gender gap than nature ever could.

I was wrong. I know now that men and women are wired differently from the very get go, and begin expressing those differences as early as a few months of age. I’ve learned this by watching my two, and marveling at the vast gap between them.

Herewith, some of the major differences between girls and boys (or at least my two):

- The girl will attempt verbal communication as soon as she’s capable of forming sounds; the boy will attempt verbal communication sometime before his 18th birthday.
- The girl will express herself through her thoughts, feelings, and emotions; the boy will express himself through his mouth, nose and rear end.
- The girl will either ask for permission or pout for something she wants; the boy will just do whatever he feels like and ask questions later.
- The girl will use emotional manipulation to hold you hostage; the boy will use his sudden mastery of the toilet door lock.
- The girl will care intensely about her outfits from the age of two forward; the boy will care intensely about not wearing an outfit as often as possible.
-The girl will listen to adult conversation as a way to interact with adults; the boy will listen to adult conversation only if strapped into a chair while said adults are talking.
- The girl will walk around an object on the floor without bothering to pick it up; the boy will run over said object on the floor without bothering to pick it up.
- The girl will care about the characters and plots in movies and story books; the boy will care only about cool cars, trains or planes and the occasional explosion.
- If you don’t carefully monitor food intake, the girl will eat nothing but junk food; the boy will eat nothing but junk food and whatever he can find on the floor.
- The girl will draw you pictures of unicorns, rainbows, self-portraits and other objects of interest; the boy will draw you pictures of the inside of his nose, complete with diagrammed boogers.
- The girl will attempt to imitate her mother in every way possible; the boy will attempt to imitate only those things about his father that will embarrass dad in public.
- The girl, when gassy, will say “Excuse me” if she commits an indiscretion; the boy will laugh like a maniac and cry out, “More! More!”
- And finally, the girl will seek your love and affection at every possible turn; the boy will seek your love and affection only when your back is turned.

I’m sure the list can go on and on – what have I omitted that you think is vital? Sound off in the comments below!
