Storm Takes Aim for Georgia

Storm Takes Aim for Georgia, Snow Showers Possible

I'm thinking this storm deserves a a post of its own so here we go!

There is currently a long wave trough that extends from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to the Great Lakes. What will happen is a cut-off low pressure system will form near MS and very slowly travel across northern AL/GA through Tuesday. This system will bring large amounts of rain to north Georgia and the southeast. Rain has been falling as far east as Cobb County today and will very slowly continue working it's way toward us. As this low develops rapidly overnight, it will also start to take on a negative tilt. Here's an animated loop of the current system and how it takes on this negative tilt. You'll notice the low pivots and leaves us in an area of rain for quite a while. This loop covers 27 hours.

The interesting side effect of this low, and what everyone is talking about, is the fact it's going to be very strong and will pull cold air from above. As the low pulls away, wrap around moisture on the back side of the low will fall as flurries or snow showers beginning early Tuesday morning, as far south as I-20. So on top of 2-5" of beneficial rain, we might get a nice white surprise too!. The ground will be too warm to stick although in a heavy downburst, it could stock to grassy surfaces. This has been and continues to be a very interesting system to follow.

Flood Watches have been issued for north Georgia already and it's possible that they will be extended a little further south. Stay tuned to DaculaWeather.com for the latest weather information where watches and warnings are posted immediately as they are issued.
