The Most Chilling Weather Warning Ever Made

It doesn't get more serious than this

On August 28th, 2005, one of the most devastating storms to ever hit our county was churning through the Gulf of Mexico and hours away from slamming into New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina was now one of the largest and most dangerous hurricanes ever with winds of 175 mph. Warnings had gone up days in advance and President Bush had already declared a state of emergency for the Gulf coast and Louisiana.

Robert Ricks was the meteorologist on staff that morning and he knew that he had one last chance to warn people of the impending disaster. What Robert wrote that day is considered to be the most chilling warning ever made by the National Weather Service. During an internal assessment by the National Weather Service, the 10:11am bulletin and its impact were analyzed. The report called the bulletin "a significant moment for the NWS during Katrina," as its detailed and explicit language did not have any previous precedent.  Take a minute to read what he wrote.

After Katrina, Congress formed a bipartisan committee to review the actions taken by the National Weather Service as well as the rest of the responding government agencies. The committee concluded that the forecasts given by the National Weather Service were timely, were not responsible for failures in other agencies, and were likely responsible for saving thousands of lives. You can read the entire internal NWS report here and the congressional report here.
