Weather for the Holidays

A look at holiday weather.

We're entering the final stretch before Christmas so I thought we'd try to get a glimpse of the upcoming weather for the next several weeks.

First, we're still in a positive AO (Arctic Oscillation) pattern right now which doesn't bode well for any winter weather in our neck of the woods. There are signs that the atmosphere might be changing but the benefits of that change won't occur until mid-January at the earliest. Not exactly like last winter is it?

We have several chances of rain this week with the GFS painting a large area of Georgia with several inches. This will be a start to an overall pattern that is looking a little wet for a little while. The first storm will stall the frontal boundary somewhere in the southeast on Tuesday/Wednesday. Wednesday might bring a slight break but by Thursday we already have a return flow and impulses running along it with more rain, especially in the interior southeast.

Our area looks to do very well with rain with this pattern and especially northern Georgia and the Appalachians around the Tenn Valley and the Carolinas. The GFS has almost 3" total over the next week, with a good southwest flow and stalled boundary. Enjoy the sunshine today because it's going to be fading away for a while. Christmas in the southeast looks damp and dreary with another chance for rain.

No major cold is on the horizon but that doesn't mean that we won't get shots of cold air from time to time, yet we will remain above normal with our temperatures.
Here are our temperature averages for December since 2008:
2008 - 48.0
2009 - 39.8
2010 - 35.5
2011 - 48.6 (so far)

Our normal average is 43 degrees. All of these records can be found here from NOAA style monthly climate summaries and here for a daily view of averages and records.

I've been working to add more weather information to DaculaWeather.com. Since mid-November I've added more than 100 pages of new weather information with more to come. I now have more than 1200 pages dedicated to weather. I've also been reorganizing the menu to make it easier to find information which I know can sometimes be difficult!

If you'd like to see our typical Christmas weather click here. Under the same menu option (Links, Georgia Weather Links, Georgia Weather Info) are other pages with Georgia climatology and significant Georgia weather events, and I add a new page for each major event that occurs. If you'd like to see what the weather was last year at this time, go to this page and click on the day you'd like to view. You can do this for any year from 2003 and up.
