Canine Fecal Matter, it truly Matters and why...

We all know that stepping in dog waste can be a sore to deal with, and cleaning off your shoes is no laughing matter, but truly, how much does it really matter?

Canine waste can actually spread a number of diseases that don't just effect the animals but can also be contracted by humans as well, which is why it is vitally important for you to know that canine fecal matter truly does matter.

The top diseases that can be spread through canine waste are Parvo, Whipworms, Hookworms, RoundWorms, Giardia and Coccidia.

Parvo, Canine Parvovirus (CPV), we are all very familiar with, but what's a little scary is the most recent outbreak was only back in 2012, which means that today it's still a potential threat to you and your fury little family members.  Parvo is actually the most infectious disease known to canines in the United States characterized by bloody diarrhea, but it can be easily prevented by keeping your yards clean and treating them on a frequent basis with Parvocide.  There are a number of varied strains of this disease and it is frequently transferred through fecal matter from one animal to the next and is known to survive for months at a time on inanimate objects like shoes, clothing, food bowls, mats, and in their cages.  Fecal matter can be transported even on the bottom of your shoes from outside to inside your own homes.  This is why cleanliness of their play and bathroom areas are vitally important to their and your own health.

Whipworms, Trichuris Vulpis or Trichuris Campanula, can also be spread by canine fecal matter as an infected pups waste houses immature eggs until maturity.  Most dogs and cats are exposed to these nasty little critters through food or water contamination.  Be sure to keep a keen eye on what your animals are consuming and never allow them to eat uncooked or raw food products.  These worms like to burrow in the intestinal track of the animals causing all types of problems for the animals.  Cleanliness is one sure way to help at preventing them from being spread from one animal to the next.

Hookworms, Caninum (Which can be transmitted by humans), Braziliense (Which can be contracted by humans), Stenocephala and Tubaeeforme (Specifically found in Felines), are the four varied types.  Hookworms cause the skin disease, cutaneous larval, in humans or and intestinal infection called esoinophilic enteritis with sever abdominal pains, and is still one of the most common intestinal parasites found in dogs and cats today, especially among puppies and kittens which tend to be more susceptible depending on their environment.  Most are typically found throughout North America and are transmitted by carrier host of an infected animal which has been ingested, by consuming contaminated food or water, or coming into contact with larvae that burrows into the body through the skin.

Roundworms, Toxascaris Leonina or Toxocara Canis, are also a very common parasite in a canine digestive track and are transported mostly by rodents and infected dogs.  This parasite is very common in kennels and where a large amount of dogs live and play together.  They are also transmitted to humans and can cause a variety of problems for us.  Young larvae will preferably move into the respiratory areas of the animal until they are coughed up and then swallowed into the intestinal track where they will mature and hatch.  Those adult worms will then lay eggs which will be passed through the fecal matter where they would be able to infect other animals such as other dogs or rodents.

Giardia, Giardia Canis, which can cause the disease Giardiasis, is a parasite that lives in the intestinal track and has been found all over the world but still it is mostly found here in the United States and Northern America.  This is not the same strain of Giardia found commonly in humans in lesser quality areas with frequently contaminated water sources, however it is still unclear if their strain can be linked to human contraction, as always it is better to stay on the side of caution and prevention as necessary.  Giardia can cause bouts of moderate to severe and chronic diarrhea in dogs and is typically transmitted through contaminated water sources.

Coccidia, are Protozoans (one celled organisms), that thrive in the intestinal tracks of dogs, mainly this is seen in puppies under six months old and older dogs with immune deficiencies and other health problems.  Puppies contract this after birth from being in constant exposure to the mothers fecal matter that is not properly cleaned.  They have a great chance at growing immune to it as they grow older without any ill side effects but they are still able to transmit it to other dogs that may not have such a strong immune system.

With all of these diseases their one commonality is the fact that they are all preventable through cleanliness of the home and play areas along with their choices in waste areas.  Keeping these areas clean, treated frequently and keeping them consistently clean will prevent many dogs from contracting and spreading them to one another.
