Corrections Officer Lands in Jail on Charges of Smuggling Tobacco: Report

The Athens woman has been charged in incidents at the Phillips State Prison in Gwinnett County.

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — A prison guard in Georgia's corrections system may be facing prison time herself after she was arrested this week on charges that she accepted bribes from inmates and smuggled in tobacco for them, according to a media report

Carolyn Siobhan Jenkins, a corrections officer from Athens, was being held at the Gwinnett County jail Thursday on a $33,600 bond, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. She has been charged with bribery, violation of oath of office, and giving items to inmates without the warden's consent.

Jenkins was working at the Phillips State Prison in Gwinnett County when she took bribes from two inmates and brought them tobacco on five different occasions, arrest warrants state, according to AJC.com. The tobacco items were considered to be contraband at the prison.

The incidents occurred in September, October and November, according to the charges, AJC.com reported. A spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Corrections declined to comment Thursday.
