We are now about halfway thru the breeding season for Canis latrans lupus. The female will dig a new den or clean out an old one for her new brood. So far, we know of 3 dens on this one Cattle Farm that I trap. However, after trapping out 13 Coyotes during the past two breeding cycles, the population of resident dogs is down dramatically. I saw one set of tracks on the farm the other day. Coyotes begin breeding in February and give birth in April to between 5-8 pups. From now until the Dispersal Phase in October, they will be more aggressive than at any other time of the year. Livestock and Pets are at most risk during this time but we will see some aggression and possibly even attacks on humans also. PETS WILL BEGIN TO GO MISSING. Coyote Sightings will increase. News reports concerning them will increase. On the Cattle Farm I've trapped for the last 3 years, I took a very Pregnant female coyote the other day that was full of pups. I captured her in a funnel where 7 trails come together on the corner of a pond dam near a swamp. That is 6-9 coyotes removed from his property at one time counting the new pups she would have had. Trapping a breeding female is the "Holy Grail" of Coyote Trapping. When I am protecting a landowner's livelihood, which in this case is his cattle, I set heavy and work to block the coyotes from getting to the newborn calves in the pastures.
