This could very well one day save the life of your loved ones so I wanted to be sure that I shared it with everyone. Please read and please share this information so that one day a life may be saved.
What's the first thing that you want to check for, of course with anyone that you may find unconscious and unresponsive, you want to check for breathing and for their pulse to see if their heart is still beating. If you cannot find either you must start CPR immediately.
Where would you check for a pulse on a dog you may wonder. Much like a person you would check for the main artery areas which can be found below their wrist, on their inner thigh, at their ankles or where their left elbow touches their chest. Also, check their gums for grey coloration and dilated pupils that will be unresponsive to light.
If you find that the animal is not breathing you must begin to give them air. On a small dog you would cover their mouth and nose with yours and blow air into their lungs. For a larger dog or animal you would simply cover their nose. Next step is to begin chest compression with the animal laying on their side, you will place your hands over their ribs where their elbows meet the chest.
For a small dog, under 30 pounds, you should compress only about a 1/2 inch to 1 inch 5 times for every breath.
For a medium sized to a large sized dog, 30-90 pounds, you should compress about 1-3 inches 5 times for every breath.
For a very large dog, over 90 pounds, you should compress about 1-3 inches for every 10 breaths.
We love our animals, they are all family to us, so lets keep them safe, healthy and happy for as long as we can. I hope you may never have to use this information but I hope that if you do that you at least have the knowledge to help your loved ones.
Thanks for reading.
