Good morning, Loganville-Grayson. I'm back in your inbox this morning to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on in town, including updates on...

  • On the first day of winter, Gov. Brian Kemp declares a state of emergency for the incoming freezing temperatures.
  • Gwinnett County parents step in to combat the surge in school violence with a positive and supportive approach.
  • Multiple warnings for scams against local residents increase as the holidays approach.

But first, today's weather:

With a high of 48, we might just experience our last day of mild temperatures until next week. Tonight will bring a pretty big chance of rain late and the winds should pick up. With a low of 20 overnight, be prepared for questionable road conditions.

Here are the top stories in Loganville-Grayson today:

  1. Gov. Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency for Georgia as we approach uncharacteristically freezing temperatures during this first week of winter. In an effort to help ensure that essential supplies can be delivered to meet residential and commercial needs, the order was expected to go into effect Wednesday and remain in place until Monday. Interstates north of the Columbus to Augusta line will be brined as well as state routes, but most local roads will not receive a treatment, so residents are encouraged to stay in place. The coldest temperatures are expected to come in Friday and last through Monday. A few preparation tips are to run water in faucets, bring in pets and plants, and check on your neighbors. (13WMAZ)
  2. The show must go on, and for one local ballet company, Northeast Atlanta Ballet Ensemble the phrase has an entirely new meaning this year. Just after wrapping its annual performance, "The Nutcracker," the Gwinnett County ballet ensemble received a call from Gwinnett County police that their trailers were broken into and almost all of their 'Nutcracker' props were stolen. Many of the props had been used for years and had sentimental value, and although some were salvaged after being found in a muddy lot in Lilburn, most will need to be replaced before next year's performance. The company has set up a Go Fund Me page https://www.gofundme.com/f/nut... if you feel inspired to donate. (WSB Atlanta)
  3. A warning has been issued from the Barrow County Sheriff's Office that hits very close to Loganville and Grayson. A woman, possibly driving a blue Kia Stinger, approached at least one resident, at their home, posing as an IRS officer. She is not with the IRS. After flashing a badge and handing out a business card with bogus information, she told the victim she was serving him with a lien for payroll taxes. Residents are asked to call 911 if they have been approached in a similar manner at your home or business. (Yahoo! News)
  4. Another warning from Gwinnett County Water Resources indicates that a person has been impersonating a Gwinnett Water employee to gain access into your home. The person claims to be from the lab and offers to collect free lead and copper samples. Gwinnett County has confirmed that it does not send employees to residents' homes to test water. If someone approaches your home about water samples, do not let them inside. If you feel threatened, you are encouraged to call 911, and any questions or concerns can be directed to Water Resources' 24-hour dispatch at 678-376-6000. (11alive)

From my notebook:

  • A group of South Gwinnett High School parents are coming together to help encourage kids to focus on positivity. Their goal is to decrease school violence in their district. These parents want to inspire students and take the attention off the fighting, and by showing up at the school before school even starts, display support for students and help to start the day off on a positive note. One South Gwinnett parent, D.A. Williams said, "a difference starts right here with us." He and his wife have been instrumental in growing the Impact Days organized by the South Gwinnett Parent Teacher Student Organization, and they are growing and gaining momentum. The group is planning to add a parent patrol to encourage students and be there for them in a positive way. (Newsbreak)
