Georgia Hate Map: Group Shows Active Racist Organizations (ICYMI)

The Southern Poverty Law Center says 32 hate groups — from the KKK to black separatists — are based in Georgia.

ATLANTA, GA — After a white nationalist gathering in Charlottesville, Virginia, whipped up racial violence that led to the death of one anti-racism protester over the weekend, the Southern Poverty Law Center is shining a light on hate groups throughout the nation.

Across the country, 917 organizations that meet the group's criteria for being designated a hate group currently are active. The SPLC says 32 hate groups — from the Ku Klux Klan and racist skinhead organizations to virulently anti-gay churches to black separatists — call Georgia home.

The SLPC website has an interactive map showing the location of hate groups state by state. Here's where those groups are active in the Peach State:

On Sunday, hundreds of anti-racism demonstrators rallied in Atlanta and Decatur. The Atlanta group marched from Woodruff Park downtown to Piedmont Park in Midtown. There, someone defaced a "Peace" monument erected in 1911 and dedicated to soldiers who fought in the Civil War.
