  1. The Gwinnett Police Department is now accepting applications for the Citizens Police Academy which will take place from Sep. 6 to Oct. 20. The mission is to "create and develop a growing nucleus of responsible, well-informed citizens who want to learn more about their police department," according to Gwinnett police. Anyone who is interested in joining the academy can get an application online; applications are due no later than Aug. 12. (Gwinnettdailypost.com)
  2. JCPenney partnered with The Boys and Girls Club for a "Shopping is Back!" celebration to surprise some kids in Gwinnett County. The surprise included a shopping spree with Onyeka Okongwu of the Atlanta Hawks. Along with the shopping spree, the mobile tour is bringing lots of fun to communities across the U.S. with live performances, local food vendors, games and giveaways. (Gwinnettdailypost.com)
  3. Jonathan Sanks, a former Berkmar High School football coach, was arrested seven years after a lawsuit claimed that he had sexually assaulted a Gwinnett student he recruited to work for football team. The district investigated allegations of a sexual relationship with a student in 2015 but found no evidence. The lawsuit was filed in 2020, and Sanks was arrested in July of 2022. (WSB Atlanta)
  4. PCOM Georgia held its physical assistant and biomedical sciences commencement ceremony last week, honoring 30 PA students and 45 biomedical students. Dr. La Dawn Hackett gave the keynote address and offered students advice when she said, "Be sure to put yourself on your 'to do list' every day...make sure you're rested and ready for the fight...because the fight is not fair." The students were granted their degrees and hooded in the auditorium surrounded by family and friends. (Athens CEO)
  5. The Winder Police Department will begin implementing new speed cameras in school zones in Bartow County, as well as new speed limit signs. According to the PD, the 30-day program will be conducted during school hours to see the number of vehicles speeding; violators will receive a warning in the mail with no fine during the 30 days. After Sep. 6, violators will receive civil violation citations in the mail. (WGAU)

  • The Inaugural Sheriff's Cup Invitational Football Game is only a few days away featuring the Grayson Rams competing against the Parkview Panthers from the Gwinnett Football League's 12-Year-Old Division.
