Grayson Storm Damage: Trees Downed, Lightning Sets House Afire

Monday's strong storm moved through the area around 5 p.m.

The Monday afternoon thunderstorms that hit parts of Gwinnett County weren’t as widespread as they were on Sunday, but they still kept caused damage in some areas.

The heaviest weather hit southern Gwinnett County near Grayson and Snellville. The storm wasn’t severe, but it did draw a special weather statement from the National Weather Service around 5 p.m.

In Grayson, Gwinnett Fire crews worked a house fire on Storybrook Court, a downed tree on Amberbrook Lane, and a possible lightning strike that may be created a smoke odor at a home on Farmstead Court. In Snellville, a tree reportedly fell on a house on Wrexham Drive.

Here’s the part of the Storm Response report from Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge (sent at 6:33 p.m.):

  • TREE ON A HOUSE

Crews responded at 5:07p.m. to an occupant report of a tree on a house in the 4000 block of Wrexham Drive, SW in Snellville. Crews found a tree that fell across the roof on the right-back corner of the house. The tree broke through the roof and ceiling material on the interior of the home. Firefighters secured utilities to the structure due to the damage. Occupants were home at the time, but were not injured. The tree caused extensive damage to the corner of the house. All fire equipment has returned to service.

  • SMOKE ODOR INSIDE HOUSE

Firefighters responded at 5:37 p.m. to an occupant report of a smoke odor inside a house and the electricity going off in the 2600 block of Farmstead Court, SW in Grayson. Crews found nothing showing from the exterior of a two-story house over a basement on arrival. Firefighters checked the home and found no sign of smoke or fire. There were no injuries reported. It is unknown whether lightning may have struck nearby.

  • HOUSE FIRE

Firefighters responded at 5:42p.m. to an occupant report of a house fire in the 2700 block of Storybrook Court, SW in Grayson. Crews found smoke showing from a two-story house on arrival. Firefighter entered the home and quickly extinguished a fire on the second floor. Occupants were home at the time and escaped unharmed. The fire appears to be the result of a lightning strike. The occupants reported hearing a loud boom and smelled smoke. They evacuated the home as the smoke alarms sounded. The fire was burning between the floor system and broke through in an upstairs room. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the one-room and part of the floor system. The family will be displaced from the residence due to extensive damage, but denied Red Cross assistance.

  • TREE IN ROADWAY

Crews responded at 5:51p.m. to a report of a tree down in the roadway on Amberbrook Lane, SE at Amberbrook Circle, SE in Grayson. PD was dispatched to stand-by due to the traffic hazard.
