Gwinnett County Public Schools Inclement Weather Procedures
Here's what to expect, and where to watch, when winter weather threatens to close down schools in Gwinnett County.

It’s hard to believe with the unseasonably balmy temperatures we’re seeing in Gwinnett, but winter-weather season is upon us.
As such, here’s a look at the procedures Gwinnett County Public Schools use when snow, freezing rain or other winter weather threatens school closings. (Source: Gwinnett County Public Schools website)
- Gwinnett schools “may close in the event of hazardous weather or other emergencies which present threats to the safety of students, staff, or school property.”
- Generally, the decision to close schools for the day will be made before 6 a.m.
- School is more likely to be closed in the early morning, due to hazardous road conditions, than to be let out early because bad weather is moving in.
- The superintendent makes the decision about school closings based on information from multiple agencies, including the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, the state Department of Transportation and public safety officials.
- If the decision is made to close schools, local television, radio and other media outlets are notified immediately.
- The information is also posted on GCPS TV and the school system’s website. GCPS TV can be found on the following local cable outlets -- AT&T under “Local Government”; Charter, on Channel 22 and Comcast on Channel 24 or 26.
- The key factor in deciding whether to close school or not is always the safety of students and staff.
