Gwinnett County Schools Make Weather Decision For Monday, Jan 8

Next week promises to be warmer in metro Atlanta. But we've got at least one more blast of freezing — and potentially dangerous — weather before we get there.

Early Monday morning, there's chance of freezing rain and sleet across north Georgia as a patch of warm, moist air hits the cold air that's been settled over us for days now. Small ice accumulations will be possible, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the area.

Residents hitting the roadways, which already could be crazy in Atlanta as football fans flock downtown for the National Championship Game between Georgia and Alabama, are urged to use extra caution when driving over less traveled roads, bridges, and overpasses.

"What is becoming more certain is that the cold air we have been experiencing will remain in place if and when the precipitation begins," the weather service said in a special weather statement. "This would result in any rain freezing on contact with most surfaces including area roadways through the morning hours.

"Although amounts are expected to remain very light, any freezing rain accumulations at all would create a glaze on roadways making for hazardous travel conditions."

According to the weather service forecast, Sunday night's low will be about 29 degrees, with wind gusts as high as 15 m.p.h. Rain, possibly freezing rain, will come before 11 a.m. Monday, when the chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

Monday's high will be around 42 degrees and there will be another chance of rain Monday night, when the low will only be 37 degrees.

The NWS noted that there's a high degree of uncertainty about the forecast for Monday because it's hard to tell exactly where the cold and warmer air will mix and how much ice we'll get when they do. The service is urging metro Atlanta residents who will be on the roads to keep an eye on the latest forecasts.

Once we're through that rough patch, though, we can look forward to some warmer temperatures throughout the week. Tuesday's high is forecast to get all the way up to 55 degrees and, by Thursday, we're looking at a high temperature of 62.

They could be some rainy days, though. There's a 20 percent chance of rain on Tuesday, jumping up to a 30 percent chance on Wednesday and a 50 percent chance on Thursday.
