Gwinnett School Releases Wrong Girl To DFCS

The 7 year old, whose name is nearly identical to another girl's, was taken to Rockdale County before her parents knew she was gone.

LOGANVILLE, GA — A Gwinnett County school in Loganville released the wrong child into the custody of state welfare workers — a mistake officials say was caused by a name mix-up.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the 7-year-old girl was pulled out of class at Rosebud Elementary School on Tuesday and driven to the state Division of Family and Children Services office in Rockdale County.

The girl's father told Channel 2 Action News that he went to pick her up Tuesday afternoon, but no one could tell him where she was. It was an hour later when a social worker realized the agency took the wrong child, he told the station.

Gwinnett County Public Schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach told the AJC the girl has the same first and last name as the girl that was supposed to be taken into state custody. Their entire names are identical except for one letter, Roach told the paper.

The girl was returned to school at about 4:15 p.m. and the correct child was picked up, Both DFCS and Gwinnett County schools say they will be reviewing their procedures.
