Gwinnett Woman Killed, Husband On The Run: Police

The woman was discovered around midnight by her 10-year-old son. Walter J. Lowe, 51, is believed to be in a black Ford Expedition.

SNELLVILLE, GA — A Gwinnett County woman was shot and killed late Thursday and her husband was on the run Friday morning, police said.

Gwinnett County Police were still on the scene of the shooting on Medlock Park Drive, near Snellville, early Friday morning. They were called to the home shortly after midnight.

According to police, Walter J. Lowe, 51, and wife Erica Powell, 46, had been fighting Friday. The couple was recently married, but had been together for several years, said police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera.

Investigators say that one of Powell's children, a 10-year-old boy, had been in and out of the home all day. He returned at about 9 p.m. to see Lowe, his stepfather, leaving the house. He didn't notice anything suspicious at the time, police said.

At around midnight, he went to check on his mother and found her suffering from a gunshot wound. He then called 911. Police responded and tried to revive Powell, but were unsuccessful.

Lowe now has active warrants for aggravated assault, felony murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was believed to be driving a 2001 black Ford Expedition with chrome wheels and license plate number RGJ8749.

Police believe Lowe to be armed and dangerous. On Friday, they provided multiple reports detailing times they've been called on Lowe in the past. Charges in those cases ranged from terroristic threats to assault and battery to criminal trespass.
