First, today's weather:

Here are the top five stories in Loganville-Grayson today:

  1. A Listeria outbreak has been reported in 10 states, including Georgia. The Atlanta-based CDC is investigating the cause, which at the time is unknown. At least 23 people have been hospitalized and one has died, though it is estimated that the number of people who are sick is higher than what has been reported thus far since it takes about three to four weeks to determine if someone is part of an outbreak. (WSB Atlanta)
  2. A 13-year-old teen shared her story of being groped by a Walton County substitute in order to help protect other children. The substitute teacher was indicted on two felony counts for allegedly molesting the girl in the middle of the classroom according to records. The girl, now 15, shared that she felt unimportant when the school hadn't taken action when they were informed of the incident; however, after the girl's mother went to the sheriff's office the substitute was arrested. (11Alive)
  3. A number of laws have recently gone into effect in Georgia, including the House Bill 1084 (Critical Race Theory), House Bill 1178 (Parent Bill of Rights), and House Bill 1283 (School Recess). Though many laws were effective following a signature from Gov. Brian Kemp this year, the first of the month brought a slew of laws passed by the General Assembly. Other laws regarding vaccinations, voting, farmers, lawmaker pensions, and free speech on campuses were also put into effect. (WSB Atlanta)
  4. Piedmont Rockdale has been recognized for its high-quality cardiovascular care and received two American Heart Association 'Get With The Guidelines and Mission: Lifeline' achievement awards. Piedmont Rockdale demonstrated its commitment to following up-to-date, research-based guidelines for the treatment of heart disease and stroke, which led to saving more lives and improving quality care. The communications specialist mentioned that the 'Get With The Guidelines' program has allowed their teams "to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, which helps [them] ensure more people in Conyers experience longer, healthier lives." (Rockdale Newton Citizen)
  5. The Excel Church in Conyers will be hosting a free food giveaway Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to help families through challenges they have experienced. There will be fresh meat, produce, household and personal products, and more. The lead pastor, K. Francis Smith, said "it is a blessing to be able to serve our community amidst a pandemic where people are experiencing economic hardship." (CBS 46 News)
