Loganville to Replace Water Meters, Purchase New Speed Guns and a Tractor

The Loganville City Council held its regular monthly meeting Thursday (Oct. 10) to discuss and approve a number of items.

Here's a rundown of the meeting:

-The city unanimously approved the purchase of new water meters. Using SPLOST funds, the $625,000 purchase will replace 5,100 water meters for the Walton County side of Loganville. The meters have a 10-year warranty.

-Two new laser speed guns will be purchased for the Loganville Police Department at $5,615. The new guns will replace two of the police department's current radar guns that are aged and in disrepair.

-The council also approved to spend $38,000 of SPLOST funds to fix 1,400 feet of old pipes along Church Street and Lucy Street.

-A new Kubota tractor will be purchased for $41,600, also with SPLOST funds. The tractor will be used for maintaining the the right of way, sidewalks, the cemetery and more around town.

-A new drop box ordinance was passed, referring to the donation drop boxes placed around the city for clothing. The ordinance places restrictions on the current and new boxes, including that the boxes have to be made from metal and not wood, and the name of the organization benefitting from each box must be listed on the outside.

-An ordinance for parking on Huntington Drive on Halloween was passed. On Oct. 31, no cars are allowed to park on the main street in the Huntington Ridge subdivision, which has been the case for the last few years. This measure is due to the difficulty residents and emergency vehicles have when driving through the neighborhood on trick-or-treat night.

-The city's annual contract with the Walton County Chamber of Commerce was renewed. The contract costs $2,800.

-The Alcohol Ordinance Amendment, as presented by City Manager Bill Jones, was passed. The amendment refers to Section 4-63 on retail package stores opening after being issued a city license.

-For utilities, the extension of the purchasing and service contracts was approved. The rates reflect the same numbers as the previous year.

-The Apartment Moratorium Extension, which applied to rezoning for apartments, was approved.

-There will be an auction on the city's surplus items Nov. 9.

-Two proclamations were given: One naming Nov. 2 as Poppy Day and another regarding domestic and teen dating violence.
