A Lawrenceville mother was arrested and charged with child cruelty after she allegedly burned her elementary school-aged son to teach him a lesson not to steal.
Citing a Gwinnett Police incident report, the AJC reported Oumou Barry, 25, is accused of heating up a spoon and burning the child on his arm in three places.
An officer was called to Jackson Elementary School on Sever Road on Nov. 11 after the school noticed the son’s arm was burned.

The child, prompted by his mother, told school authorities he was accidentally burned by his mother with an iron. Later, Barry admitted she burned him and that “she was not a good mother,” according to the incident report. The child was turned over to the father.
