Here are the top stories today in Loganville-Grayson:
- After a high school student was hit by a pickup truck on Dogwood Road while leaving Brookwood High School, the Gwinnett Police Department wants to offer safety tips to keep pedestrians and drivers safe. The 14-year-old student suffered a head injury and a broken leg but will recover from his injuries. The driver, who did have the right of way, remained at the scene and assisted emergency personnel. Pedestrian deaths on roadways have increased, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants to promote safety on roadways. Here are some general safety tips, from the NHTSA, for drivers and pedestrians. (Monroe Local)
- Drivers — Look for pedestrians everywhere, and always let them cross.
- Drivers — Obey speed limits and be alert school zones and pedestrian heavy areas. Never pass vehicles in a crosswalk.
- Pedestrians — Be alert to traffic, walk on sidewalks, and only cross in crosswalks, intersections, or well-lit areas where drivers have time to see you.
- Pedestrians — Wear brightly colored clothing during the day and reflective clothing at night. Try to make eye contact with drivers so they know you are crossing.
- Gwinnett County Public Schools wants to make a change to the current abstinence-based, 'Choosing the Best,' sex education curriculum, which has been in place for 22 years. However, over 90 percent of the county's parents are opposed to the change to a more comprehensive health curriculum. The new 'Health Smart' curriculum includes detailed illustrations and "lessons on gender identity and sexuality." According to parent surveys, they feel that those conversations should be had at home. Parents can opt their kids out of sex education. The vote, on the changes, will take place at next month's Board of Education meeting. (WSB Atlanta)
