Here are the top five stories in Loganville-Grayson today:
- Gwinnett's Eastside Medical Center is celebrating its first anniversary of Piedmont Healthcare affiliation today. CEO Trent Lind shared that the center has "put a lot of hard, labor-intensive work behind [them] in terms of integration and now [they're] excited to see the fruits of [their] labor and the benefits that will come to [the] community..." The integrated care network allows patients to receive all levels of service, and there are plenty of opportunities to additional services and expansions within the system. (Gwinnettdailypost.com)
- Seckinger High School in nearby Buford will be Gwinnett's first artificial intelligence (AI)-themed school and is set to open on Wednesday. The college preparatory curriculum will be taught through AI and include an avenue for students who want to learn about developing AI. The principal, Memorie Reesman said, "We recognize that significant shifts in technology, especially in regards to artificial intelligence and machine learning, how it impacts our lives and our work...so we want to make sure [they] are ready for that future." - A Georgia man called in a bomb threat to avoid having to work, and he has been ordered to repay nearly $40,000 in restitution. 23-year-old Elliott Sherman pleaded guilty to false information and hoaxes according to a U.S. Attorney. FBI Atlanta special agent Keri Farley said, "Hoax threats consume law enforcement resources needed for actual emergencies, disrupt commerce, and terrify potential threatened victims." (WSB Atlanta)
- Gwinnett Police Foundation awarded seven college scholarships of $1,500 during their latest board meeting. The scholarships were awarded to dependent children of active Gwinnett Police Department employees, and they are intended to encourage the recipients to pursue leadership and academic excellence. - Gwinnett County officials are once again warning people to stop swimming in the dangerous Yellow River in Stone Mountain. After rescuing several people, including a young girl, from the river this summer, officers have begun to issue written warnings and citations to keep visitors out of the water. Police are hoping that park visitors will choose to act safely for the remainder of the summer. (NewsBreak)
