Report: Deputy's Girlfriend Shot Herself While Couple was 'Intimate' in Bed

Walton County deputy Dwight Buchanan reportedly loaded a pistol and handed it to Nikki Guined, after a night of drinking and an argument.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate a bizarre shooting death in Monroe, where the girlfriend of a Walton County deputy apparently killed herself while the two were in bed.

WSB-TV first reported the incident, which occurred early Dec. 10 morning after a night of drinking at a Brentwood Boulevard home. Police said Nikki Guined, 20, shot herself in the head after an argument with Dwight William Buchanan, 21, a deputy jailer with the county.

Buchanan, who has not been charged in the incident, is on administrative leave during the investigation.

Citing the incident report, the TV station reported the couple had argued but made up before going to bed following a night of drinking with friends.

As the couple was being “intimate,” Guined asked Buchanan for the Glock pistol, but at first he didn’t comply, according to WSB. She continued to ask for the gun, saying “Don’t you trust me?” several times before the deputy obliged. She asked for him to load the weapon, which he did by loading the magazine, chambering a round and then removing the magazine before giving the gun back to her.

According to the incident report, “She then placed the muzzle of the gun under her right jaw and pulled the trigger.”

Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman, who said he called in the GBI to be transparent about the investigation, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he believed the 9mm Glock pistol was a gift to Guined.

Chapman told the AJC that perhaps Buchanan might not have known the gun would fire because other similar pistols apparently cannot fire when the magazine is missing. He said he wasn’t sure whether or not the shooting was accidental.

“Alcohol was involved. You just don’t know what led up to it. We don’t know what she was thinking,” Chapman told WSB.
