Restaurant Inspections: Food Stored Beneath Butane Cans at Mall of Georgia Eatery

See which Gwinnett restaurants passed with flying colors this week -- and which had some issues.

A December 22 inspection at Mimi’s Cafe at Mall of Georgia revealed lots of problems -- and resulted in a failing grade.

Food storage appeared to be a particular concern, according to the report. Specifically, some food was found being stored near and beneath cans of butane, and under raw eggs and dripping water.

Dirty utensils were found in a sink that was supposed to be used only for food preparation and a hand-washing sink was being used to store ice.

Food that needs cold storage was being stored above the recommended 41 degrees F, thermometers in coolers weren’t working, and avocados that had already been washed and cut still had stickers on them.

The inspection report also said the restaurant’s manager “lacks awareness in key areas of risk factor control or good retail practices.”

Mimi’s received a failing grade of 56. A follow-up inspection will be conducted. If issues aren’t resolved, the restaurant could lose its health permit.

Each item on an inspection form has a point value ranging from 1 to 9 points, with violations deducting points from a best possible score of 100.

Higher points are taken for items with higher risk to cause illness, while repeat violations take even more points.

Letter grades assigned are A for totals of 100 to 90 points, B for 89 to 80, C for 79 to 70, and U for less than 70.
