Here are the top stories today in Loganville-Grayson:

  1. A grisly discovery Monday evening led investigators to Drowning Creek near Dacula. A skeleton was discovered, and officials believe that they are human. A more thorough investigation was conducted the following day and will continue to determine the identity of the victim and any information that can help with the investigation. Police will continue to work with the Medical Examiner to also determine the cause of death. (Newsbreak)
  2. On Tuesday morning, while five people were having coffee in the kitchen of a Lawrenceville home, they noticed fire in the carpet of a nearby room. All five people were able to escape the fire, however, they lost two of their pet cats. Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The home was determined to be a total loss, after Gwinnett County fire crews extinguished the fire, and the Red Cross will work with those displaced by the fire. Officials say that they determined some "smoking material" in the carport of the home most likely led to the accidental fire. Gwinnett County fire officials encourage homeowners to "practice home fire safety" and check to make sure smoke alarms are working properly. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  3. Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation is asking Gwinnett County residents for their participation as they seek feedback on the expansion of the trail systems in the county. The Piedmont Pathway is a project that will connect Gwinnett with its neighboring counties. The 28-mile trail will connect Barrow, Dekalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett and provide alternate modes of transportation as well as access to more recreation and greenspace. Public meetings will take place at various Gwinnett County Parks this month, with the first being at Rhodes Jordan Park in Lawrenceville on Feb. 9 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. (Access WDUN)

  • Braxton's Antiques in Loganville is adding to its retail business. The longtime auction house is expanding their offering with the opening of their new antique mall last weekend. Braxton's has been in business in Loganville for the past 37 years, and at one time had the antique mall open. After moving toward auctions only for over 20 years, they are once again offering the antique mall to the Loganville community. The mall will be open in the same location as the auction house, on the corner of Main Street, 6 days a week, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Monroe Local)
  • Mark your calendars for our local Dancing with the Stars fundraiser supporting Project ReNeWal! On March 25, Walnut Grove High School, in Loganville, will host one of the county's most important fundraisers. Project ReNeWal, founded in 1995, helps support local victims of domestic violence in Walton, Newton, and Rockdale counties. The show will feature local dignitaries who have been trained by dance teachers. Tickets are $30 and are on sale now at Dancing with the Stars Tickets. Come out and support Project ReNeWal.
