Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway is offering a free responsible firearms carry and safety course for local teachers.

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway is offering a free responsible firearms carry and safety course for local teachers March 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The course will be held at 12 Stone Church Hamilton Mill at 3858 Braselton Highway, Buford.
In light of the Broward County School shooting which left 17 dead children and teachers and the wounding of many more in Parkland, Florida Feb. 14, some people have suggested that teachers be allowed to carry concealed weapons in class in order stop or deter a school shooter. In Georgia, guns are not allowed in school safety zones.
The class in Gwinnett County will include training on Georgia gun laws, including those concerning guns on school campuses. Other topics will include use of deadly force, open and concealed carry and applicable federal statutes.

A 15-year-old was arrested Feb. 15 after he brought a hand gun to Lanier High School in Gwinnett County, according to a police arrest report.
The student was arrested after school administrators were tipped off he had a weapon on campus, Principal Christopher Martin said in a statement.
"We moved quickly to investigate and during our search we did find that a student had a gun in his possession. In addition to criminal charges for having a weapon on campus, the student also will face disciplinary action," said Martin.
"News of a weapon on campus is unsettling for us all, especially in light of the tragic events from yesterday in Florida," he said.
