Two Shot, Mom Killed In Walton County

A suspect is in custody after the shooting, which happened shortly before 2:11 p.m. Sunday in Social Circle.

SOCIAL CIRCLE, GA — A mother of two is dead and a man is in the hospital after a shooting Sunday afternoon in Walton County.

Police in Social Circle responded to two 911 calls at 2:11 p.m. in the area of Ronthor Drive and Tower Road. Once they arrived, they found two people who had been shot — Heather Smith, 24, of Covington, and Quantavious Banks, 26, of Social Circle.

Smith was declared dead at the scene and Banks was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Suspected shooter Desmond Sherron Jackson, 22, also of Social Circle, was arrested and is being held at Walton County Jail. He is charged with felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated battery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

In a Facebook post, Social Circle Police said the victims and suspect knew each other and that investigators are working to determine what led up to the shooting. They say Jackson lived at the home where the shooting happened.

Social Circle Police told WSB-TV that some sort of dispute, possibly on social media, is believed to have led to the shooting. A witness told the station that Smith had two children.

The Walton County Sheriff's Office, coroner's office and district attorney's office, as well as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, are assisting in the case.
