  2. Gwinnett County's Board of Commissioners approved a $2.27 billion budget for 2023. The lone Republican, District 4 Commissioner, dissented in his first meeting since he was elected in November. Gwinnett is Georgia's 2nd largest county and continues to grow. Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson does not anticipate that the budget will lead to a tax increase that will be set this summer. The budget allots $1.78 billion to operations and $488 million to capital improvements. The fund for personnel increased by 10% to $466 million and allows for 131 new county positions. The 2023 budget also includes a language learning program for employees to aid with communication between county employees and the community they serve. (Newsbreak)
  3. Gwinnett County schools will be assessing their sex education curriculum, 'Choosing the Best,' as well as taking a look at another program, 'Health Smart Program.' Both programs have abstinence as the foundation of their curriculum, however, Brenda Stroll, a retired nurse who helped develop Gwinnett's current program, believes that the 'Health Smart Program' is inadequately addresses condoms and sexually transmitted diseases. Student activists are pushing for an updated and expanded program as the current program is limited to heterosexual relationships and the risks of sex. A new program would have the opportunity to address topics like consent, gender, and sexual identity. A recommendation will be made in the spring for the 2023-2024 school year. (Access WDUN)
