1. A new bill, SB247 was introduced to the Senate during this session that would make booting cars illegal throughout the state. Many booting companies are predatory in their practice, and drivers are often trapped waiting for the boots to be removed. Booting fines can range from $75 to several hundreds of dollars. Sen. Josh McLaurin supported the bill, and he believes that the bill has enough momentum to pass during this session. The bill would make it illegal for local governments and private companies to boot cars, and each offense would come with fines. The bill has bipartisan support and the support from residents. 2. A missing Walton County man was last seen on Thursday, Feb.23 at about 11:30 p.m. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after traveling to the city for a business trip. Nathan Millard, 42, is about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs about 180 pounds, and "he was last seen in a black shirt, blue jeans, and a green ball cap." His cell phone was found a few blocks from the hotel, where he was staying, and his debit card has been used since he was last seen at the Happy's Irish Pub on Third Street. Baton Rouge Police are asking anyone with information to please contact them at 225-389-3853 or Crime Stoppers at 225-344-7867. (Newsbreak)
3. A Gwinnett County young man, Marlon James, has become Georgia's youngest certified hydroponic farmer at only 12 years old. James grows fresh produce in his 12 vertical stands in the foyer of his Gwinnett County home and believes that hydroponic farming is the way to combat hunger. The need for food assistance has experienced a 300 percent surge since the COVID-19 pandemic. Since hydroponics doesn't require the use of land, food can be grown anywhere with just the use of nutrient rich water. James often donates his produce to the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry. Currently, James is working toward getting two grants with UGA's head of hydroponics, and he would love to partner with a local group to put urban farms in locations that would benefit from this type of farming. • Loganville, Monroe Area and Walnut Grove High Schools were recently named 2023 Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Schools by the Georgia Department of Education! The honor was given to only 273 schools, based on the results of AP exams. Walnut Grove High School was recognized as an AP Humanities School, an AP Humanities Achievement School, and an AP STEM School. Loganville High School was recognized as an AP STEM School and an AP STEM Achievement School. • The City of Loganville's Main Street will be closed at noon on Friday, March 3 through 3 a.m. on Saturday, March 4 for filming. The weather may cause schedule changes, so please monitor posted signage. Parking will be available on Broad Street and at the Health Center for anyone wishing to visit businesses along Main Street. • Loganville Christian Academy boys basketball team defeated Tattnall Square Academy in the GIAA Quarterfinals, this weekend, to move into the Final Four. With a close game, the Lions moved into the 4th quarter with a 1-point lead, but with their strong defense, they kept the game close. Devin Larry and Drake Kucharik drained 3-pointers and let the strength of their defense, with Ky Fryar and CJ Dockery, keep them in the lead. Até Kara hit a final 3-pointer to clinch the win. The Lions will be headed to Mercer University on Thursday for an 8:30 p.m. tip off, taking on Stratford Academy. (Facebook)
